Outcome

Working as a product designer, team delivered a next-generation design for the mercer money app, working alongside their fintech development partners.

The problem

A leading UK  is a financial well-being app, whose open banking technology lets users build a holistic, near real time view of their finances and retirement plan; helping people understand what retirement means for them.

Phase 01

Discovery
& Research

The project kicked off with me, setting up and running co-creation workshop to understand the user and business motivations, what datapoints are available to us, and get a good picture of the roadmap ahead

Phase 02

Agile
Iteration

After that, the worked in agile sprints, taking on each epic from early concept, validating the idea with users within days, playing back the findings, and creating high fidelity documentation

Documenting
& Annotations

At the end of each sprint, it was very critical the work was documented to the smallest detail. The work was highly complex and technical, so to achieve accuracy I paired with investment, finance, pension experts. I validated each design decision, data point, to make sure every possible scenario has been acccounted for in the designs.

Process

Collaboration & co-creation

Through co-creation workshops and close collaboration around specific modeller data points, I worked to update their product and roadmap for their flagship product fund, Mercer master trust.

Customer-centric approach

Taking each feature from concepts to delivery, I championed a customer-centric approach of quick prototype iteration, to drive financial literacy and increase engagement across the app, and encourage greater open banking connections

Defining how user navigates through the app

To do this, I mapped users' jobs to be done and proposed an AI that didnt separate everyday finance from pension planning, but connected financial behaviours through what I called 'little moments'

Mapping components and datapoints

Knowing how the designs connected to underlying data was crucial. To do this, I worked closely with the client team, to fully coordinate the backend database schema with page components. My role was to define acceptance criteria and consider all possible edge cases

The outcome

In collaboration with our fintech development partners, and retirement calculation API provider, I delivered a next-gen design for the finance well being app, and delivered highly adaptable and scalable dashboard that not only met the client's demands but also fulfilled the technical requirements of our development partner.

Throughout the process, close collaboration with the visual designer allowed us to rigorously test and meticulously document each screen for future project development.

What did I learn

Frequently the pension account would have been setup by the employer. This lead to users being reluctant to sharing additional financial information, under false risk of that information being accessed by their employer. I had to reassure users with education around open banking platform, and easy to understand data privacy policy

Understanding user psychology

What did I learn

When clients actively participate in the design process, providing feedback and insights, it not only ensures that the final product aligns with their vision but also fosters a sense of ownership and satisfaction, leading to a more successful and user-centered digital product

What did I learn

Thoroughly documenting designs is a cornerstone of successful UX design, that ensures that all aspects of the design, from user flows to interface elements, are clearly defined, facilitating effective communication with clients and development teams. Proper documentation also showcases design process and decisions, making it an essential component of a ccomprehensive UX process.
